How to keep the cancer away by eating right food CANCER is a dreaded word all over the world the second leading case of dead after cardiovascular disease.Every year thousands of people died of cancer. About 8% of global deaths can be attributed to it.
Cancer can be defined as as an abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells of tissues.Which typically leads to death if untreated most cancers take the form of TUMORS.A tumors is mass of new tissues that serve as no psychological purpose.Instead,it is like a parasite which feasts on the body’s resources and invades other tissues.A benign tumor can cause death if it blocks the blood supply of a tissues or an organ, while a malignant one will spread or metastasise to distant sites, via the blood or lymphatic circulation, there by producing invasion tumours in almost all parts of the body.
There are about 300 types of cancer, of which eight are most common of the stomach, ling, breast, colon/rectum, cervix, mouth/pharynx, Oesophagus and liver. Cancer can be treated by radiotherapy(use of radiation)chemotherapy(use of cytoxic agents)and surgery.All these three treatements have been extensively used to treat various types of cancer but they have their own limitations and drawbacks. The process of carcinogenesis or tumourogenesis usually takes place through the steps of intiation and promotion.Carcinogens or mutagens cause damage to the body’s DNA.Many carcinogens generate Oxygen redicals which react with DNA.The DNA thus undergoes mutation and if not repaired,may proceed via several steps and with help of promoters, result in a malignant growth of cells.
There are several carcinogens that occur in the environment as well as in food. Nitrosamines have been found to occur in many foods as in food.Nitrosamines have been found to occur in many foods we eat daily,like salted dried fish,and dried pickles, sundried chilies, snacks like samosas, sources and ketchups, with the concentration of volatile nitrosamines ranging from 0.5 to 24 ug/kg.Our daily diet may serve as sources of either direct of indirect carcinogens.Food contaminants may act as carcinogens. They may modify the involve (within the body) formation of carcinogens.Nutrientsmay beneficially modulate carcinogens by helping activate detoxicate them.The scientific community has been trying to pinpoint and suggest the mechanism of cancer in order to remedy it.But although several hypothesis have been suggested so far,man has been unsuccessfully in isolating the reasons which cause cancer in humans.
Food however, has always played a vital role.Nutrition has an important bearing on the determination of the cancer risk in humans.Our forefathers stressed the use of certain foods as a vehical for treatring diseases.Substances in commonly used spices like coriander,pepper and mustard seeds have proven to project people in the tropics from ultra violet radiation and skin cancer.It would therefore,benefit mankind if scientist would look towards prevention the disease rather than curing it.

Epidemiological studies(based on the science of epidemics)have shown that innumerable nutrients like vitamins A and betacarotene,which come from yellow and green vegetables and orange fruits like the mango reduce the effect of carcinogens and inhabit the growth of tumour cells. The pro-vitamin A, batacarotene,is strongly lined to decrease in the LUNG cancer risk in smokers.An intake of vegetables and fruits may reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth,pharnx,larynx,oesophagus,stomach,colon,lungs,cervix and prostate.
Another macronutrient, fibre(roughage) which can be easily obtained from fruits and vegetables, whole grains, unrefined flour Atta, pulses and legumes, is known to have very strong links in preventing cancer, particularly that of the prostate and colon.Cereal fibres are found to be more effective than vegetables fibres.
Selenium, a mineral, was suggested as a cancer protective agent in as early as 1912.Areas with a high level of selenium in food crops have shown a lower cancer incidence.
Other nutrients like the vitamins C and E have been found to have anti cancer properties. Spices which are commonly used in our daily cooking such as turmeric, Cloves, sesame, mustard, cumin, aniseed, coriander, poppy, cinnamon and asafoetide, all have chemosprotective.
Effects, The juices of the pumpkin, brinjal, broccoli apple, ginger, pineapple and mint leaves, all help in deactivating the carcinogens found in cooking proteinaceous foods.
One interesting finding is that a reducing in calorie intake results in a lesser formation of tumours. This has been proven convincingly.Ingecting about 70 percent of ones normal calorie intake found to lower the incidence of cancer.
It is also interesting to know that the total calorie intake is more important that whether the calorie are obtained from fat or carbohydrates. Recongnising the beneficial effects of nutritional factors, you can minimize the risks of cancer by observing the following guide lines.
